DAS TROJANISCHE DING - Adrien Tirtiaux
How does an artwork influence the place where it stands? Artist and architect Adrien Tirtiaux is fascinated by the boundary between private and public space. For DAS TROJANISCHE DING, he builds a bridge between LLS Paleis in Antwerp and 019 in Ghent.
Although the two locations could hardly be more different (a former terraced-house snack bar versus 019’s old welding factory), the same monumental sculpture fits surprisingly well in both places. Tirtiaux responded cleverly to the challenges faced by both organisations: he used a pile of leftover timber that was taking up space at 019 as the raw material for the work.
The title is a nod to the Trojan Horse. That may sound like a clever trick, but here it stands above all for ingenuity: how an inventive intervention can give a stalled situation or a pile of leftover materials a new lease of life.

More about the organisation
019 is a collectively run platform for architecture, graphic design and visual art. It began in 2013 as the nineteenth project of the non-profit organisation Smoke & Dust in an old welding factory at Dok-Noord in Ghent. What started as a temporary experiment grew into a permanent venue and a distinctive way of working. Today, 019 produces exhibitions, public-space projects, publications and research together with artists, designers and makers themselves.
