Making Sense communities and Musea?
On Thursday evening, 8 October, we invite you to take part in an open dialogue: a conversation about how museums and other cultural institutions work together with communities.
Now that Design Museum Gent has reopened, we want to continue working towards the democratisation of our cultural practice. We do this by creating space for different voices and perspectives, and by actively involving people in the decisions we make and in how our cultural spaces are used and shared.
During this first ASSEMBLY*, we invite you to join the conversation. What are the challenges and where does the added value lie? What has already taken place within the cultural landscape? What and who came before, and how do we look towards the future together? How do we share space with others in a spirit of trust and recognise barriers? When is inclusion not just a topic, but a way of working?
Of course, we cannot do this alone. Through this conversation, we will explore how community-based practices can provide a solid foundation for further thinking about what exhibiting, engaging and participating can mean today for different audiences and users.
ASSEMBLY01 - Making Sense Communities and Museums? aims to create an interactive environment for discussion, bringing together a range of stakeholders and interested people from across the sector. We are bringing together cultural institutions, grassroots organisations, cultural workers, designers, artists and engaged citizens. In this way, everyone can alternate between actively contributing to the conversation and listening attentively.
Assembly: a group of people gathered together in one place for a common purpose.

Making the museum together
The new wing will be an open meeting place for ideas, exhibitions, conversations and new communities. What happens there in the future is something we would like to shape together with you. Design Museum Gent aims for 50% of its public programme to be initiated by, or developed in collaboration with, visitors, creatives, local residents and a wide range of communities.
