Gent Waste Brick for DING

An innovative façade brick made from local waste streams. That was the ambition that brought Design Museum Gent and BC materials together for DING, the museum's new wing. The result: 85,000 compressed façade bricks that demonstrate what circular construction can look like in practice.

What started as an ambitious idea grew into an innovative construction project.

Design Museum Gent explored how waste from the city of Ghent could be given a second life as a building material. Together with BC materials, the Gent Waste Brick for DING was developed: a compressed façade brick made from local waste streams.

The brick stands out not only for its distinctive texture, but also for its sustainable production process. Unlike conventional bricks, the Gent Waste Brick is not fired in a kiln, significantly reducing its environmental impact. In this way, waste is transformed into a valuable raw material for the architecture of tomorrow.

A total of 85,000 bricks were produced for the new wing of Design Museum Gent. Production took place at Het Arsenaal, where visitors could watch the manufacturing process up close and learn more about the circular principles behind the project.

The Gent Waste Brick for DING demonstrates how design, material research and local collaboration can contribute to more sustainable solutions for the construction sector. The project shows how innovative ideas can become tangible responses to today's climate challenges.
