Collection-API

When the founders of the museum wrote these words in the invitation to the founding meeting in 1903, they were probably thinking of pencil and paper. Yet their vision of openness, exchange and inspiration still defines the museum today. We continue that vision in a digital context. We want our collection to be not only physically accessible, but also a creative and dynamic digital resource for everyone. That is exactly where our Collection API comes in.

“Het museum aldus tot stand gekomen zal toegankelijk zijn aan eenieder die zal begeeren aldaar teekenen, studeren, coopieren, en namaken van wat tentoongesteld zal worden.”

What is an API, and why does the museum use one?

An API (Application Programming Interface) is a digital interface that allows different computers, software systems and applications to communicate safely and efficiently. APIs power a large part of today's digital world, from music streaming services to smart home devices.

Our Collection API enables both people and machines to interact directly with our collection data. Whether you are conductingacademic research, developing an application or using collection images for a creative project, we welcome every form of reuseand engagement. It is the digital continuation of the museum's founding ambition from 1903.
