Hella Jongerius

Dutch Design Days

Hella Jongerius (°1963) is born in the town of De Meern (The Netherlands). She studied industrial design at the Eindhoven Design Academy and has since combined elements of that discipline with those of traditional craftmanship in products, textiles and ceramics. Jongerius works on the cusp of design, craft, art and technology to fuse traditional and contemporary influences , high tech and low tech, the industrial and the artisanal. She is one of the most exiting and innovative figures in contemporary design. Many of her early designs were manufactured by Droog Design, the influential Dutch design collective. Nowadays she puts her own work into production through Jongeriuslab, her Rotterdam studio. She is also developing products for manufactures such as Royal Tichelaar Makkum, Vitra and Ikea.

The exhibition in Gent will feature some of her designs for Vitra (The bovist, The Worker, The Rotterdam Chair), the vases for Ikea and some of the plates of the Porcelain Color Research project she did with Royal Tichelaar in Makkum (The Netherlands).
