Challenging the châtelaine!

Chatelaine Julia Child

The word châtelaine conjures up the image of a lady of the castle with a bunch of keys hung from her waistband. Later on the word was also used for small chains. Châtelaines were both an ornament and an implement. At the request of the Helsinki Designmuseum, 78 international artists drew inspiration from this object to design a contemporary piece of jewellery. They provide a new, creative interpretation for this old "ornament". All châtelaines have a story and hold a memory of a role model. Hilde De Decker, for instance, the only Belgian designer to be selected, designed a tribute to pianist Hélène Grimaud.
